Who needs contrast, anyway?

This is an old sketch that was unfinished in my sketchbook, and as I was flipping through the pages today I happened to notice it.

I do not like unfinished things.

Although it was not a very good composition to start with, I decided to go along with it just for the sake of experimenting. I must say that it really needed to have been thought through a bit more in itsĀ  early stages.

There is a lot going on in there.

Who cares though? It is just a sketch. And it showed me I need to study leaves, because I did not like a single one a put in this drawing. Flowers are somehow easier to conjure up.

Well, it is done and it gave me some EXP points to boost (yeah, I’m a nerd).

Berries, on the other hand, are awesome… Must draw them more often.

Day 13 – Take 2

Today’s prompt was named that way because we were supposed to choose elements from two previous drawings to merge into this next piece. I chose the loose traces of my Thread drawing and the absolute contrast of the Cloud-watching one.

I did it in ink with Uni Pin fineliners in the details but using a brush for the wider areas.

My inspiration for this piece was the work of Brenda Erickson, her moon pieces are just glorious.

It was a long process but time flew while I did the repetitive patterns.

And just one more, because I like it a lot:

Now just one more to go!

Eight flowers

Once upon a time there bloomed eight beautiful yet very different flowers.

They each had their own rhythms, their own dreams and a particular personality, all of which made them stand out from the crowd.

Instead of pulling them apart, these traits only brought them even closer to one another.

As time passed all eight of them followed unique paths, as must we all, for each had a different destination calling to their hearts.

As their roads twist further away from the others they are not afraid.

They still grow with every passing day, and they are never alone.

This I made for my friend’s birthday. She is part of our bouquet, and a botanist no less! She is going far away, but adventure awaits and she will blossom in England for now.

Framed and ready to travel overseas.

We are proud of you, Jabuticaba!

A fresh new challenge

So, I am a student in the Skillshare platform and this week I decided to start a 14-day challenge proposed by one of the teachers there, Marie-Noƫlle Wurm. This might be just what I need to explore my creativity and try to find my style, somewhere in there.

It might seem like I set the table to take this picture, but it was actually exactly like this when I finished the drawing…

The prompt of the first day is “Journey”. Well, that got my mind going in a million different directions, but suddenly I had this image of walking and leaving something good behind as I went forward, and then I knew where to start. I used a photo reference for the legs (because human figure is… hard, lets leave it at that for now, lots of practice hours still needed).

Tomorrow I will find out the next prompt!

Peonies

Guess what I got for Christmas? It is called “How to Draw Modern Florals 101”, by Alli Koch. You can find out more about her wonderful work over here.

I fell in love with her style, and have been craving her book ever since it came out. And I have already gone through the daisy, tulip, anemone, sunflower and now the peony.

This was my take on it:

Note my sorry attempt at calligraphy… Got to practice that.
